"Embracing Diversity: The Power of Cultural Connections"

Amity Outdoors

Growing up and experiencing different cultures and beliefs has been a defining and pivotal part of my life. These experiences have had a profound impact on my understanding of people, cultures, and traditions, instilling in me a sense of hope in the goodness of the world. They have greatly influenced my identity and continue to shape who I am today. I would like to share some of the experiences I had during my childhood and teen years, as they hold a significant place in who I am.

One of the first and most transformative experiences was living in a charming old village outside of Warwickshire, England. As a young teenager, I quickly noticed the distinctiveness of my "American" accent and how different I was from the locals. However, I embraced the British way of life and seamlessly blended into the culture. This taught me the importance of adaptability and embracing diverse cultures. I learned to value the beauty of diversity and the enrichment it brings to our lives.

Our local village home was a delightful 250+ year-old house with creaky narrow stairs and lack of efficient plumbing. However, we were excited to fully embrace the British lifestyle. Each day, my siblings and I would wear our blue and white plaid uniforms, knee high socks and attend the local village grade and secondary schools.

My time living in England taught me the importance of adaptability and embracing diverse cultures. I learned to value the beauty of diversity and the enrichment it brings to our lives. Residing in a small village allowed me to form deep connections within the community, fostering a sense of belonging that I cherished.

After two years in England, we returned to the United States, and I found myself back to the norm of being an American teenager. However, my time of loving local country bands and red, white, and blue didn't last long. At the age of 15, my family once again embarked on an international adventure, and this time we found ourselves in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a third-world country that was influenced by poverty and pain. This was a completely new world for me and adjusting took me a bit longer than in England.

While in Malaysia, we immersed ourselves in the vibrant Asian culture. From exploring bustling markets to selecting live chickens for our family dinners, our daily routine reflected the richness of Malaysian life. My siblings and I enrolled in an international school which provided an opportunity to learn side by side with classmates from over 50 different countries, allowing me to form connections through shared experiences despite our diverse backgrounds. My best of friends came from countries such as Japan, Tonga, Germany, Holland, Fiji and Brazil, to name just a few.

Although Malaysia wasn't my first experience living outside the US, it was the first time I was truly living in foreign speaking country, where English was not the primary language and Islam was the primary religion. However, this language barrier didn't hinder my ability to adapt and thrive.

Living in Malaysia taught me invaluable lessons, deepening my appreciation for cultural diversity and the importance of celebrating our differences while seeking common ground with others. These experiences profoundly influenced my outlook on life, shaping how I approach relationships and interactions with individuals from varied backgrounds.

Reflecting on these cherished memories fills me with gratitude for the lessons learned and the connections forged during my time overseas. These experiences have enriched my life, providing a broader understanding of the world and a genuine appreciation for cultural diversity.
